You've gotta spend money to make money, so the saying goes, but is that always true? QuickFile offers free accounting services over a cloud system, allowing you to perform all the basic accounting tasks you're likely to need. Its list of additional features is extensive for a free system, and its interfaces are user friendly, as well as colourful.

It might seem strange to be hyped up about colour, but when you've seen as many accounting packages as we have, it's nice to be greeted by something other than off-blue pie charts. In fact some people work better with programs that use a range of colours as it helps them to differentiate between information and therefore work more effectively, so it's not to be sniffed at. Meanwhile, QuickFile offers good support for users with regards to banking options, VAT calculations and keeping records. However, we did feel that it let itself down slightly with regard to planning and forecasting, which are relatively minor in this system.

Since Quickfile.co.uk provides support for up to 50 bank accounts, you can easily manage income and outgoings between multiple service providers. These are automated with Barclays and Paypal, meaning you won't need to input data manually, and they also offer multi-currency support that is linked to live exchange rates so you won't lose out with inaccurate conversions. You can produce a range of reports to help analyse data, including basic profit and loss, balance sheets, charts of accounts and ledgers, and more. You can also check out historical debtor and creditor reports to assess performance over time. 

Multi-users and accounting professionals may be interested in the Affinity Features, which allow you to manage hundreds of accounts from one dashboard, as well as tracking filing dates and send internal messages so that you can chat with clients. These features also allow you to create your own templates which you can share with clients, so that all of your accounting information is easy to digest.

As we mentioned earlier, we did feel that Quick File is lacking somewhat in planning and forecasting features, which you will find have been more developed by other accounting software providers. This could be particularly challenging if you are new to accounting or have a new business and wish to project potential earnings into the future, with various debts and uncertainties taken into account. We were, however, pleased to see the level of security used to keep your information safe, which includes the whole system being backed up every 15 minutes, so you'll never lose even half an hour's work. We also like the integration of iPhone and Android apps which allow you to photograph receipts and automatically store them in your system so that you can claim expenses when the tax man comes knocking. This isn't a unique feature but it's definitely a beneficial one that makes the most of modern technology.

With a decent range of accounting and additional features, Quick File offers a superior free service to its users. It might not be ideal for everyone, particularly if you're interested in forecasting accounts, but it ought to provide enough to satisfy most small-medium businesses.
